The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me! My name is Diana. I am a proud American born Xicana of Mexihcah/Mexican-American heritage. I am an author, performance poet, and overall creative artist and like to pretend I am a kitchen goddess.  Sometimes when I cook I pretend I am doing a cooking show and make my voice sound like Julia Child while my purple wing Amazon parrot and terrier observe as my audience. Other times I play music full blast and dance around while cutting, chopping, mixing and cooking. I grew up with life mostly centered around the kitchen with my grandmother, mother, and four sisters working together to make our family dishes. We didn’t have much, but we had fun.

The name “CIHUAPILLAHTOCAZINTLI” (pronounced SEE-wah-pee-lah-toh-KAH-zeent-lee) seems like a mouthful but it really is not.  It is a word in the ancient Mexihcah Nahuatl language that ALL Xicana/Mexican women should identify with. It means QUEEN. It is a word I take great pride in. We women are “queens” in our own world, in our own lives: We nurture others,  we are compassionate, we love our families, and we lead and inspire others. There are many languages spoken in Mexico — around 70 indigenous languages — and over 350 dialects. I am currently seeking knowledge of this language and am mostly self taught. I am enjoying this journey!

With this blog, I hope to inspire others to take pride in their heritage, whatever it may be,  learn of your origins, and celebrate it! I was born, raised and currently living in the Southwest, Arizona, and enjoy living and loving life here!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.
